Orientalists often claimed to have read the Qur’an in Arabic, but an analysis of the manuscripts and editions they annotated shows that what “reading” entailed varied considerably in practice, from superficial comparison with earlier translations to close examination of Qur’anic commentaries. This talk will explore how the orientalist study of the Arabic Qur’an transformed in the centuries before 1800 in a European context, from Istanbul to Leiden.
