The exhibition “The Quran from Afar “: A fascinating journey from the Maghreb to Europe through the history of the Quran
The Institute for Research on the Contemporary Maghreb (IRMC) in Tunis, in partnership with the National Heritage Institute (INP) and the National Library of Tunisia (BNT), announces the opening of a major exhibition entitled “The Quran from Afar”. It was held from February 14 to April 30, 2025, at the National Library of Tunisia.
This exhibition is the result of an ambitious research program funded by the European Research Council (ERC), entitled European Qur’an (EuQu). Its objective is to examine the place of the Quran and Islam in European philosophical, religious, and cultural thought since the Middle Ages. This innovative project highlights the circulation of the Quran between the Maghreb and Europe by unveiling exceptional manuscripts rarely exhibited to the public. These precious pieces, drawn from Islamic heritage, bear witness to the Quran’s influence beyond its geographical and cultural borders.
The originality of this exhibition lies in its ability to reverse traditional perspectives. Rather than focusing solely on the Quran’s circulation in the Muslim world, “The Quran from Afar” explores its impact and role in European thought through the centuries. The exhibition thus invites visitors to rethink the relationship between Europe and the Islamic world, while illustrating the complex history of cultural, intellectual, and spiritual exchanges that have marked this dynamic.
In terms of presentation, the exhibition stands out for its aesthetic and educational approach. Through the use of modern multimedia (interactive screens, maps, immersive videos, etc.), visitors will be able to immerse themselves in this historical exploration in an interactive and playful way. The scenography, designed to enhance the architecture of the National Library of Tunisia, was designed to capture the attention of a wide audience, particularly younger generations.
By emphasizing the circulation of ideas and knowledge between cultures, the exhibition aims to deconstruct the traditional boundaries between East and West. “The Quran from Afar” is a call for openness, intercultural dialogue, and reflection on shared values. It offers visitors a unique opportunity to discover little-known facets of the Quran’s circulation, while exploring the intersecting influences between Islam and European thought, from the Middle Ages to the present day. This immersive and educational experience highlights the common heritage of civilizations and the power of cultural exchange.
