DESCRIPTION:Tercera conferencia del programa Aula Árabe Universitaria\, a cargo del historiador John Tolan\, de la Universidad de Nantes. \n27 de octubre de 2021\, 18:00 h \nAuditorio Casa Árabe\, Madrid \nEn castellano \nFoto: Portada de L’Alcorano di Macometto de Giovanni Battista Castrodardo de Belluno\, primera traducción impresa del Corán en una lengua europea (Venecia\, 1547). \nEn 1143\, Robert de Ketton produjo\, a instancias del abad Peter de Cluny\, la primera traducción al latín del Corán. Esta traducción\, existente en 24 manuscritos\, fue una de las principales formas en que los lectores europeos tuvieron acceso al libro sagrado musulmán. Muchos de sus lectores\, como el propio Pedro de Cluny\, leyeron el Corán para refutarlo\, ya que para ellos fue la escritura fundacional de una herejía grave. Sin embargo\, muchos leían el Corán por otras razones y su lectura no siempre fue hostil. \nEn 1543\, cuatro siglos después de que Robert produjera la traducción\, Theodor Bibliander la publicó en Basilea\, junto con una colección de otros textos sobre el islam y un prefacio de Martin Luther. Para los escritores protestantes Bibliander y Luther\, el Corán podría ser una herramienta útil en la lucha contra la Iglesia Católica\, una herramienta para demostrar\, como Luther dijo que “el diablo del Papa es más grande que el diablo de los turcos”. Los escritores católicos desarrollaron rápidamente contraargumentos\, peinando el Corán para encontrar similitudes entre sus “herejías” y las arrojadas por Lutero o Calvino. El Corán latino\, como veremos\, ya forma parte del bagaje intelectual y cultural de Europa entre los siglos XII y XVI\, y los intereses y usos que le aportaron sus lectores europeos fueron complejos y variados. \nCasa Árabe organiza esta conferencia sobre “Lecturas del Corán en Europa latina (siglos XII-XVI)” a cargo de John Tolan\, profesor de Historia a la Universidad de Nantes y miembro de la Reial Acadèmia de Ciències i Arts de Barcelona y de la Academia Europæa\, en colaboración con el Grado de Historia y el Máster en “Mundo Ibérico Medieval: Hispania\, al-Andalus y Sefarad” de la Universidad Autónoma de Madrid (UAM). Presentará y moderará la sesión Santiago Palacios Ontalva\, profesor de Historia Medieval de dicha universidad. \nA lo largo de la misma\, el profesor Tolan presentará también The European Qur’an”: The Latin Qur’an\, 1143–1500: Translation\, Transition\, Interpretation (De Gruyter\, 2021)\, libro colectivo que ha editado con Cándida Ferrero Hernández (Universidad Autónoma de Barcelona) y que sale a la luz el próximo 25 de octubre\, resultado del proyecto “EuQu: The European Qur’an”\, que coordina con Mercedes García-Arenal (CSIC)\, Roberto Tottoli (University of Naples\, L’Orientale) y Jan Loop (University of Kent). \nJohn Tolan es profesor de historia a la Universidad de Nantes y miembro de la Academia Europæa. Es doctor en Historia por la Universidad de Chicago y posee también un Máster en Historia de dicha universidad y estudios de posgrado en el Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales de Paris (HDR)\, además de una licenciatura en Lenguas Clásicas por la Universidad de Yale.  Ha recibido diversos premios y distinciones\, entre los cuales se encuentran dos becas del Consejo Europea de Investigaciones (ECR\, en sus siglas en inglés) y la Prix Diane Potier-Boès de la Academia Francesa. SUMMARY:Conference “The Morisco Diaspora and Morisco Networks across the Western and Eastern Mediterranean”
DESCRIPTION:This conference aims to bring together scholars who work on the movements of Muslims from Spain to other parts of Europa and the MENA Region between the fall of Granada (1492) and the first half of the seventeenth century. These movements had different contexts and characteristics. Most of the movements were induced by repression of Islam\, later the expulsion decree forced Moriscos out of the Peninsula. But there were also movements back to the Peninsula\, especially between 1609 and 1640. \nWe aim to study these movements and the motives of individuals groups to participate in them. We will do so in a comparative perspective with other minority groups\, such as the Sephardic Jews\, but will also study the responses of the Christian majority and minority groups. \nOrganized by the EuQu project and IS-LI

DESCRIPTION:21 – 25 June\, 2021\nUIMP Summer Course\nUniversity Mendendez Pelayo of Santander\, Spain \nProgram and registration \nThe objective of this seminar is to analyze the role that the Qur’an had in interactions with Islam in modern and medieval Europe\, in debates between Christians of various persuasions and doctrines and in criticism of Christianity during the Enlightenment\, among other areas of investigation. To what extent does the Qur’an constitute part of the intellectual repertoire of Medieval and Early Modern Europeans of different Christian denominations\, of European Jews\, freethinkers\, atheists and\, of course\, European Muslims and how much is it embedded in the political and religious thought of Europe? During the sessions we will study how the Qur’an has been interpreted\, adapted\, used\, and formed in Christian European contexts since the Middle Ages\, in order to understand how the Holy Book has influenced both culture and religion in Europe.\nThroughout the sessions\, we will examine the translations of the Qur’an\, texts of religious controversy and European collections of Arabic manuscripts. Moreover\, the presentations will be complemented with round-table debates where the most representative case studies will be explained. Note that the course will be taught by a group of leading international specialists in the field.

DESCRIPTION:The next EuQu Seminar of Work in Progress will be held on Thursday\, 3 June\, at 16.00 (CET). \nReading the Arabic Qur’an in Early Modern Europe\nBy Dr Paul BABINSKI\, University of Copenhagen & Dr Theodor Dunkelgrün\, University of Cambridge.\nOrientalists often claimed to have read the Qur’an in Arabic\, but an analysis of the manuscripts and editions they annotated shows that what “reading” entailed varied considerably in practice\, from superficial comparison with earlier translations to close examination of Qur’anic commentaries. This talk will explore how the orientalist study of the Arabic Qur’an transformed in the centuries before 1800 in a European context\, from Istanbul to Leiden.\n  \n

DESCRIPTION:The next EuQu Seminar of Work in Progress will be on Friday\, 12 March\, at 14.00 (CET) \nOur post-doc. researcher Asaph Ben-Tov will be presenting some preliminary findings for a chapter in the book The Uses of the Qur’an in Early Modern Germany which he is co-authoring with Jan Loop. This chapter focuses on the Tübingen mathematician and orientalist Wilhelm Schickard (1592-1635) and the intellectual and confessional ramifications of his intensive study of the Qur’an. In addition to Schickard himself\, the chapter attempts to trace the scholarly engagement with Islam within Schickard’s close circle of friends and collaborators in Tübingen and considers possible links between these pursuits and this particular confessionally unorthodox milieu during the Thirty Years War. \nThis will be followed by some comments and additional findings by Prof. Jan Loop. \nAll Welcome!!

From the 12th century to the 19th\, European Christians read the Qur’ān in Arabic\, translated it into Latin\, Greek and various vernacular languages\, refuted it in polemical treatises\, and mined it for information about Islam and Arab history. The “European Qur’ān”\, in its various manifestations (Arabic editions\, Latin and vernacular translations) should be conceived as scholarly efforts to understand Islam; as weapons in polemical exchanges between divergent versions of Christianity; as financial ventures on the part of printers and publishers; and as tools for the understanding of Semitic languages\, Arab history and culture\, and the history of monotheism. \nThe team that leads the project —Mercedes García-Arenal\, John Tolan\, Roberto Tottoli\, Jan Loop— with their respective units in Madrid\, Nantes\, Naples and Copenhagen\, will be dealing with various aspects of the transmission\, translation\, uses and study of the Qur’ān in Europe\, on the role the Qur’ān played in debates about European cultural and religious identities\, and more broadly about the place of the Qur’ān in European culture. \n* The research leading to these results has been funded by the European Research Council (ERC) under the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme\, grant agreement no. 810141\, Project EuQu: “The European Qu’ran. DESCRIPTION:Lieu Unique à Nantes – France\n \nTable-ronde avec : \n\nMohammad-Ali AMIR-MOEZZI\, Directeur d’études en Sciences Religieuses\, École Pratique des Hautes Études\, membre correspondant de l’IEA de Nantes\nSuleiman MOURAD\, Professeur d’histoire des religions\, Smith College\, Northampton\, Etats-Unis\, directeur de l’IEA de Nantes\nJohn TOLAN\, Professeur d’histoire médiévale\, Université de Nantes\, co-directeur du projet de recherche européen ERC Synergy Grant «Le Coran européen» (EuQu)\n\nLe Coran des historiens\, co-dirigé par Mohammad-Ali Amir-Moezzi et Guillaume Dye\, est le résultat d’un travail d’une trentaine de chercheurs sur près de 4000 pages : une « Introduction » fondée sur des données archéologiques\, historiques\, etc. sur le milieu qui a vu naître le Coran ainsi que sur la genèse du corpus coranique\, puis\, pour la première fois\, un commentaire continu de la totalité des 114 sourates du Coran synthétisant deux siècles de recherches scientifiques sur le texte sacré des musulmans tout en présentant les études actuelles. \nAprès la présentation de cet ouvrage\, Mohammad-Ali Amir-Moezzi abordera les différents aspects problématiques du Coran. Repérés par les orientalistes depuis les débuts du XIXe siècle\, ils sont également présents dans les sources islamiques des premiers siècles de l’hégire. Ce qui montre que\, pendant très longtemps\, le Coran a été l’objet d’âpres débats et l’enjeu de conflits violents entre les musulmans. \nMohammad-Ali Amir-Moezzi est directeur d’études en sciences religieuses à l’École Pratique des Hautes Études\, membre correspondant de l’IEA de Nantes. \nIl est l’auteur de nombreux ouvrages\, notamment Qu’est-ce que le shi’isme ? (avec Christian Jambet\, Fayard\, 2004) ou plus récemment La preuve de Dieu. La mystique shi’ite à travers l’œuvre de Kulaynî (Cerf\, 2018). \nSuleiman Mourad est professeur d’histoire des religions au Smith College\, Northampton\, Etats-Unis\, directeur de l’IEA de Nantes. Ses recherches portent sur l’histoire islamique et la pensée religieuse\, le Coran\, Jérusalem\, l’idéologie du jihad. Il a notamment publié La mosaïque de l’islam (Fayard\, 2016). \nJohn Tolan est professeur d’histoire médiévale à l’université de Nantes\, co-directeur du projet de recherche européen ERC Synergy Grant «Le Coran européen» (EuQu).
