SUMMARY:33rd Annual Conference of Academia Europaea (AE) Building Bridges 2022
DESCRIPTION:The 2022 meeting will be held at the Barcelona Biomedical Research Park (PRBB) on October 26 and 27\, 2022.\nProfessor John Tolan from Nantes Université will be giving a presentation on the 26th of October. \n\nTITLE OF PRESENTATION: Religious diversity and cultural transmission in Europe: 2 ERC projects \nAbstract of presentation\nFrom 2010 to 2015\, I directed an ERC program (advanced grant) entitled “RELMIN: The legal status of religious minorities in the Euro-Mediterranean world (5th-15th centuries)”. I hired a multidisciplinary team of scholars to study legal texts that defined the status of Jews and Christians living in Muslim lands and Jews and Muslims living in Christian lands. We produced a database of over 600 texts (original texts in Arabic\, Greek\, Hebrew\, Latin and various European vernaculars; translations into English and French; analysis and bibliography). See http://telma.irht.cnrs.fr/outils/relmin/index/  We also organized workshops and conferences and published a series of 10 books (PhD theses and conference proceedings) with Brepols.\nI am currently one of the four principal investigators of the ERC synergy grant program “EuQu: the European Qur’an”. Our team of over 30 investigators (PhD students\, post-docs\, senior researchers) study the impact of the Qur’an on European cultural\, intellectual and religious history. See http://deji.cchs.csic.es/\nI have also served as a member of the ERC starting grant committee SH6 (history) in 2013 and 2015 and as chair of the committee in 2017 and 2019.\nMy contributions to this round table\, based on these various experiences with the ERC\, will focus on the opportunities that the ERC offers to researchers in the humanities and social sciences and on how to take advantage of these opportunities. \nBiographical note\nJohn Tolan works on the history of religious and cultural relations between the Arab and Latin\nworlds in the Middle Ages and on the history of religious interaction and conflict between Jews\, Christians and Muslims. He studied at Yale (BA classics)\, University of Chicago (MA & PhD history) and the Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales (Habilitation à diriger des recherches: HDR). He has taught in various universities in North America\, Europe\, Africa and the Middle East; he is currently professor of History at the University of Nantes and member of the Academia Europæa and the Reial Acadèmia de Bones Lletres de Barcelona. He has received numerous prizes and distinctions\, including two major grants from the European Research Council and the Prix Diane Potier-Boès from the Académie Française (2008). He is author of numerous articles and books\, including Petrus Alfonsi and his Medieval Readers (1993) Saracens: Islam in the Medieval European Imagination (2002)\, Sons of Ishmael (2008)\, Saint Francis and the Sultan (2009)\, Faces of Muhammad: Western Perceptions of the Prophet of Islam from the Middle Ages to Today (2019)\, and Nouvelle histoire de l’islam\, VIIe-XXIe siècles (2022). He is one of the four coordinators of the European Research Council program “The European Qur’an” (2019-\n2025; http://deji.cchs.csic.es/ \nRead the programme\nhttp://barcelona.acadeuro.org/home/building-bridges/building-bridges-2022/class-meeting-programme-2022/

SUMMARY:Summer School “The Qur’an in inter-Christian polemic” June 2022
DESCRIPTION:14-17 June 2022 \nNantes\, Maison des Sciences de l’Homme Ange Guépin\n5 allée Jacques Berque\, 44021 Nantes Cedex 1\nSimone Veil Amphitheatre \nOrganized by ERC project “The European Qur’an” (https://euqu.eu). \nTheme:\nHow have Christian authors in Europe used and appropriated the Qur’an?   We are interested in how the Qur’an was used as a historical and linguistic archive\, as a mine of heretical ideas and as a tool used in confessional rivalries. Our focus will not be restricted to the main confessional camps\, Roman Catholic and Protestant\, but will also include the many ways in which groups of the so called radical Reformation (Socianians and other anti-Trinitarian movements)\, different groups inside the Roman Catholic world\, as well as Deist\, Muslim and Jewish authors in Europe\, used the Qur’an in their polemical writings. We will also study how translations of the Qur’an were deployed as argumentative weapons for preaching the superiority of Christianity to Mudejars and Moriscos in Spain. Additionally\, the question of nationalist motivations in the collecting and translating of the Qur’an will also be taken into consideration: beginning in the late 17th century\, various European countries vied with one another to produce the best translation of the Qur’an made directly from the Arabic.  We will further investigate if and how polemical and historical uses of the Qur’an changed in the late 17th and 18th century and early 19th century. The Qur’an continues to play an important role in polemical writings\, in political as well as religious domains. \nFormat:\nA series of roundtables with presentations of research by PhD students and postdocs.  Each roundtable will be hosted by two colleagues. \nPresentations may be made in English or in French. \nEligibility:\nThe summer school is open to doctoral students enrolled in any country\, in any discipline\, as long as their dissertation subject and the proposed talk are related to the theme of the summer school. \nCosts:\nThe summer school will be financed by EuQu and the University of Nantes and will be free of cost to the students accepted. Participants will be lodged in student housing at no cost. Lunch will be provided free to participants. Travel to Nantes will not be paid by EuQu\, and participants should seek funding from their home institutions. \nFormat:\nThe summer school will take place 13-17 June 2022. Doctoral students will each make a 20-minute presentation; faculty from EuQu and other partner institutions will chair the panels and give their reactions to student presentations.  While it is preferable to attend the full summer school in Nantes\, in some cases online presentations will be accepted. \nCovid protocol during the event :\nDue to sanitary protocols and restrictions\, you may need to show a “green pass”: a proof of vaccination or negative PCR test before entering the premises. \nSubmission guidelines:\nProposals for a 20-minute paper may be submitted\, by December 15\, 2021\, to euqu@univ-nantes.fr. SUMMARY:'Master of the Oriental Tongues': A Syrian Christian in Eighteenth-Century Germany
DESCRIPTION:‘Master of the Oriental Tongues’: A Syrian Christian in Eighteenth-Century Germany \nPublic Lecture by Dr Simon Mills (Newcastle University)  \n8 June 2022\, 16.15 CET \nRoom 6B-0-22 – University of Copenhagen \nFor online participation register here: https://ucph-ku.zoom.us/meeting/register/u5AkdOqprzIoH9QbapLelqwvSez35WUXA1Dz \nThis lecture is dedicated to the life and legacy of Shukrallah al-Dadikhi (c.1694–1734)\, an Arabic-speaking Christian from Aleppo. In his early teens he left Syria to study in Paris with the Jesuits\, then commenced a journey which would take him from Rome to Geneva\, through Germany to Halle\, and back across Europe to London\, where he died without seeing again the land of his birth. Reconstructing his travels and career will illuminate the ‘Catholic and Protestant Orients’\, two interconnected worlds of Jesuit schoolmasters\, Syriac studies at the Vatican\, German bibliophiles with a passion for the Qur’an\, and the Reformed missionary societies of Pietist Prussia and Protestant England. Yet at the centre of the story is Dadikhi himself – a man whose secret eluded both his contemporaries\, and a series of twentieth-century scholars.

SUMMARY:International Workshop - The Holy Book of the Ishmaelites in the World of Eastern Christianity
DESCRIPTION:The Holy Book of the Ishmaelites was the name commonly used by Eastern Christians of various traditions to refer to the Qur’an. Since the emergence of Islam in Late Antiquity\, Eastern Christians speaking Arabic\, Armenian\, Coptic\, Ethiopic\, Georgian\, Greek\, Church Slavonic\, Russian and Syriac came in contact with Islam and its Holy Scripture. From the Mediterranean lands to Russia via the Balkans\, Anatolia and Caucasus\, the experience of Eastern Christians with their Muslim neighbors and/or rulers was shaped by diverse multicultural and multiconfessional contexts in which their approach to the Qur’an played a significant role in defining religious identity and the dynamics of communal life. \n\n\n\n\nThis international workshop will explore how Eastern Christians engaged with the Qur’an and its Islamic interpretations from the medieval period until the end of the eighteenth century. Bringing together different religious traditions\, one of the main scopes of the workshop is to build a platform of discussion between scholars working with source material from Arabic\, Armenian\, Coptic\, Ethiopian\, Georgian\, Greek\, Church Slavonic\, Russian and Syriac contexts\, with a focus on how these milieus shaped Eastern Christian responses to Islam and its Holy Scripture. \n\n\nHow did texts on Islam and Qur’an circulate within groups and networks? How did they cross confessional boundaries? Who were their authors and intended audiences? These and similar questions will guide the discussions\, and will generate – we hope – new debates for the entangled history and cross-cultural history of the Eastern Christian communities from the medieval to the dawn of modernity.\n\nhttp://deji.cchs.csic.es/2022/03/23/international-workshop-the-holy-book-of-the-ishmaelites-in-the-world-of-eastern-christianity/

SUMMARY:The Qur’an in Rome. Catholicism and the Study of Islam in Early Modern Era
DESCRIPTION:1-2 March 2022 \nThe objective of this conference will be to give an overview of the perspectives through which the Catholic world studied the Qur’an and Islam at the beginning of the modern era (16th-17th centuries). We will try to show how although Catholic authors inherited a series of well-established polemical tools (Collectio Toletana\, Riccoldo da Montecroce\, etc.) from the Middle Ages they were nonetheless able to renew their approach to the study of Islam\, adapting it to the new historical context and inaugurating a scientific and philological study of texts.

SUMMARY:Near Eastern Studies Lecture by Paul Babinski
DESCRIPTION:“From Compilation to Indexing: Tracing the Practice of Early Modern Orientalist Scholarship” \nFebruary 16\,12:00 PM Eastern Time (US and Canada) \n\nPaul Babinski (University of Copenhagen) : Post-Doc member of the ‘European Qur’an’ (EuQu) ERC Synergy Grant Project\nHosted by Sabine Schmidtke (School of Historical Studies\, IAS).\n\nHow did orientalists read\, learn languages\, and produce dictionaries\, editions\, and other works? Annotated manuscripts in particular offer a glimpse into the orientalist’s study\, showing the sources they used\, their methods of deciphering texts and comparing manuscripts\, and their collaboration with amanuenses. Annotations also afford us a view of development over time\, charting practices of early modern orientalist scholarship through shifting patterns of note-taking. This talk will trace that history in the early modern period\, giving an overview of the conventions of orientalist annotation and focusing on a comparison between manuscripts from the two premier Western European Arabists of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries\, respectively: Jacob Golius and Johann Jacob Reiske. Both scholars’ libraries remain largely intact\, and\, viewed broadly\, offer a perspective onto questions of scholarly specialization\, the character of philological progress\, and the changing social contexts of orientalist learning. \nRegister in advance here: https://theias.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZYucuutqD8sH9Ej6uFuNoOS2u08trqw-8iO \nAfter registering\, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the webinar.
