DESCRIPTION:An event to show some facets of the interconnection between Islam and Medieval and Early Modern Europe\n\n \nThe Academia Europaea Budapest Knowledge Hub\, in collaboration with the Institute of History of the Research Centre for the Humanities\, is organizing a public lecture entitled “Picturing the Quran: representations of the Muslim holy book in European iconography\, 15th-18th centuries” by Professor John Tolan\, Member of Academia Europaea and PI of the ERC Synergy project EuQu.\n\n \nEuQu is an ambitious six-year research project (2019-2025) studying the ways in which the Islamic Holy Book is embedded in the intellectual\, religious and cultural history of Medieval and Early Modern Europe. This ERC Synergy Grant project studies how the Quran has been translated\, interpreted\, adapted and used by Christians\, European Jews\, freethinkers\, atheists and European Muslims in order to understand how the Holy Book has influenced both culture and religion in Europe.\n\n \nVenue: Conference Hall\, Library and Information Centre of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences\, address: 1051 Budapest\, Arany János u. 1.\n\n \nLanguage of the event: English\n\n \nThe invitation to the event can be downloaded here.\n\n \nJohn Tolan is a historian interested in the entangled lives of Jews\, Christians and Muslims in the Middle Ages and beyond. He has taught in universities in North America\, Europe\, Africa and the Middle East; he is currently professor of History at the University of Nantes (France) and member of the Academia Europæa. He has received numerous prizes and distinctions\, including two major grants from the European Research Council and a prize from the Académie Française. He writes in English\, French and Spanish; his work has been translated into Italian\, Turkish\, Polish\, Russian\, Bosnian\, Arabic and Korean. He is author of numerous articles and books\, including Saracens (2002)\, Francis and the Sultan (2009)\, Faces of Muhammad (2019)\, Nouvelle histoire de l’islam\, VIIe-XXIe siècles (2022)\, and England’s Jews: Finance\, Violence\, and the Crown in the Thirteenth Century (2023). He is one of the four coordinators of the European Research Council program “The European Qur’an” (2019-2025; euqu.eu).

DESCRIPTION:IEA de Nantes\n5 allée Jacques Berque\n44000 Nantes\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPolitiques éducatives\, postures professionnelles\, leviers d’action. Organisé par John Tolan et Sébastien Urbanski et l’IEA de Nantes avec le soutien du Centre de recherche en éducation de Nantes (CREN). \n\n\nL’espace public est périodiquement saturé de thématiques en lien avec les religions : patrimoine\, fêtes\, attentats\, discriminations\, sensibilités religieuses blessées\, financement de lieux de culte\, conflits internationaux\, attachements identitaires\, etc. La liste\, loin d’être exhaustive\, est suffisamment importante pour placer l’effort éducatif en première ligne. Les élèves ont en effet besoin d’outils non seulement pour évaluer\, dans les débats publics\, ce qui est plausible ou trompeur ; mais également pour développer une capacité à distinguer les contextes d’énonciation\, les registres de discours et les arènes multiples où le thème des religions s’invite régulièrement – et parfois au prix d’une certaine confusion. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nPlus encore\, ces thématiques sont devenues partie intégrante de positionnements politiques qui s’accusent mutuellement de ne pas comprendre la façon pertinente dont la laïcité devrait appréhender les religions. Or\, à ce jeu\, les extrêmes semblent gagnants.  Les principes républicains sont devenus subitement attractifs à des penseurs qui perçoivent la laïcité (telles qu’ils la comprennent) comme l’émanation de « nos » valeurs face à des minorités religieuses qui surgiraient sans avoir été invitées. En retour\, il n’est pas rare d’entendre que la laïcité serait intrinsèquement oppressive face à des religions et identités communautaires supposément plus émancipatrices. Une posture lucide et scientifiquement informée ne saurait se satisfaire de cette alternative. C’est pourquoi la journée met en dialogue des spécialistes de l’enseignement\, des religions et de la laïcité afin de mettre au clair les principaux éléments de réflexion qui nous permettront\, ensemble\, de créer des leviers au service d’actions éducatives concrètes. DESCRIPTION:1st to the 2d of February 2023\nUniversity of Copenhagen \nThe ERC Synergy Grant project ‘The European Qur’an’ is delighted to announce its forthcoming workshop “Jews\, the Qur’an and Islam: Contacts and Influences” which will take place on the 1st to the 2d of February 2023 in Copenhagen. This workshop aims to explore how Jews approached the Qur’an and Islam from the Middle Age to the early modern period both in the lands of Islam and in Europe. Through various sources and textual genres ranging from polemics\, exegesis to Qur’anic translations\, we will discuss how Islam was perceived\, how the Qur’an was used and how the Jews in some contexts were influenced by the material\, textual and theological aspects of the Islamic tradition. The workshop will try to reflect the variety of the Jewish engagement with Islam and the Qur’an\, which far from being monolithic\, expressed in different ways across time and space. \nOrganized by Naima Afif\, post-doc at EuQu University of Copenhagen. \nThe program will soon be online.

DESCRIPTION:Les rencontres des “Jeudis de la bibliothèque” reprennent avec la présence de John Tolan le 26 janvier à 18h autour de son ouvrage “Nouvelle histoire de l’islam VIIe -XXIe siècle”. \nAu croisement des disciplines et des horizons géographiques\, l’Institut d’Études Avancées et\nla Maison des Sciences de l’Homme organisent un cycle de rencontres autour des écrits de leurs chercheur.e.s : Les Jeudis de la Bibliothèque.\n \n \nNouvelle histoire de l’islam VIIe -XXIe siecle aux éditions Tallandier\nJohn Tolan\nQu’est-ce qu’être musulman au XXIe siècle ? Pour certains\, l’essence de l’islam serait la charia\, loi qui dicte le comportement rituel et social\, révélée par Dieu au Prophète et à la première communauté de fidèles. Pour d’autres\, l’islam serait une spiritualité ouverte sur le monde\, célébrant la diversité de l’humanité et la paix. De telles divergences ne sont pas nouvelles. Avec cet ouvrage\, John Tolan raconte comment ce dernier-né des trois grands monothéismes s’est développé\, non pas en autarcie mais en contact avec les traditions religieuses juives et chrétiennes\, dans un mélange de cultures arabe\, grecque\, perse… Il analyse les fondements et les mutations de l’islam. SUMMARY:Acknowledging Affinity\, Insisting on Distance: A Recognizing Religions Workshop
DESCRIPTION:In texts as well as in testimonials and representations\, intercultural encounters are often narrated in terms of affinity and distance. Something in the other attracts either because it is familiar or because it looks foreign; or it gets denounced and portrayed as unacceptable for one of the same two reasons (that is to say: both another tradition’s perceived proximity and its perceived foreignness can be used to justify either the attraction it possesses to the observer or the rejection it elicits). \nIn this workshop\, we ask participants to reflect on the work that the notions of affinity and distance are made to perform in a range of source materials as strategies for appropriation and othering\, drawing close and distancing. Consistent with the overarching theme of ‘Recognizing Religions’ the aim is to uncover the ways in which not only dispositions towards the other take shape in the act of recognition\, but how each community’s self-understanding also gets communicated and transformed in the process. \nNovember 21 | 10:00 am – 6 pm November 22 | 9:00 am – 12 pm \nIn-Person (NYUAD Campus) and on Zoom The two-day workshop is open to the NYUAD community and by invitation. DESCRIPTION:The 2022 meeting will be held at the Barcelona Biomedical Research Park (PRBB) on October 26 and 27\, 2022.\nProfessor John Tolan from Nantes Université will be giving a presentation on the 26th of October. \n\nTITLE OF PRESENTATION: Religious diversity and cultural transmission in Europe: 2 ERC projects \nAbstract of presentation\nFrom 2010 to 2015\, I directed an ERC program (advanced grant) entitled “RELMIN: The legal status of religious minorities in the Euro-Mediterranean world (5th-15th centuries)”. I hired a multidisciplinary team of scholars to study legal texts that defined the status of Jews and Christians living in Muslim lands and Jews and Muslims living in Christian lands. We produced a database of over 600 texts (original texts in Arabic\, Greek\, Hebrew\, Latin and various European vernaculars; translations into English and French; analysis and bibliography). See http://telma.irht.cnrs.fr/outils/relmin/index/  We also organized workshops and conferences and published a series of 10 books (PhD theses and conference proceedings) with Brepols.\nI am currently one of the four principal investigators of the ERC synergy grant program “EuQu: the European Qur’an”. Our team of over 30 investigators (PhD students\, post-docs\, senior researchers) study the impact of the Qur’an on European cultural\, intellectual and religious history. See http://deji.cchs.csic.es/\nI have also served as a member of the ERC starting grant committee SH6 (history) in 2013 and 2015 and as chair of the committee in 2017 and 2019.\nMy contributions to this round table\, based on these various experiences with the ERC\, will focus on the opportunities that the ERC offers to researchers in the humanities and social sciences and on how to take advantage of these opportunities. \nBiographical note\nJohn Tolan works on the history of religious and cultural relations between the Arab and Latin\nworlds in the Middle Ages and on the history of religious interaction and conflict between Jews\, Christians and Muslims. He studied at Yale (BA classics)\, University of Chicago (MA & PhD history) and the Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales (Habilitation à diriger des recherches: HDR). He has taught in various universities in North America\, Europe\, Africa and the Middle East; he is currently professor of History at the University of Nantes and member of the Academia Europæa and the Reial Acadèmia de Bones Lletres de Barcelona. He has received numerous prizes and distinctions\, including two major grants from the European Research Council and the Prix Diane Potier-Boès from the Académie Française (2008). He is author of numerous articles and books\, including Petrus Alfonsi and his Medieval Readers (1993) Saracens: Islam in the Medieval European Imagination (2002)\, Sons of Ishmael (2008)\, Saint Francis and the Sultan (2009)\, Faces of Muhammad: Western Perceptions of the Prophet of Islam from the Middle Ages to Today (2019)\, and Nouvelle histoire de l’islam\, VIIe-XXIe siècles (2022).
